Agriturismi Siena: agriturismo La Peschiera > where we are
Casole d'Elsa, Siena

The Farmhouse Holiday Facility lies in the village Il Piano only a few minutes from the town of Casole d'Elsa and less than half an hour's drive from Siena, the Palio city. Given its location it is definitely an excellent starting off point for visiting some of the interesting areas nearby.

Casole d'Elsa is an ancient town sitting on a hill, with medieval houses and buildings and the remains of the fortified city walls. The historical centre appears very well cared for. The Collegiata, dating from the 12th century, was transformed into gothic forms in the 16th century and holds paintings and sculptures mainly from the 15th century Sienese school. In the 14th - 15th century Sienese Fortress, which is now the town hall, there is a fresco by Pacchiarotti. Of no lesser importance is the area with the church of San Niccolò at Mensano, the fortified church at Marmoraia, Monteguidi castle and numerous other architectural and natural splendours.

Siena

SANTS MARIA AND GERVASIO AT MARMORAIA
The church of Saints Maria and Gervasio is based on a basilica-like floor plan, with a semicircular apse and three naves; the church is still consecrated and belongs to the church authorities.
The walls are made with horizontal runs of parallel rows with squared ashlars levelled with travertine. The origins of the walls with broken stone blocks and plenty of lime in the section with the apse are uncertain. To the front you can observe that the parts which are raised in respect to the original structure along with the extension are made from stone mixed with brick wedges in sub-horizontal rows.

Brief History
The church is mentioned for the first time in an act of 1047 when it appears to be under the patronage of the counts Lambardi di Staggia.

Bosco del Berignone

A splendid hilly wooded section safeguards areas where man's activities have not interfered with the presence of numerous wildlife species. The area is characterised by the passage of the River Cecina and its tributaries, along with parts of the River Era and River Cornia basins. Pliocene clays prevail and the morphology is characterised by soft rolling hills combined with gullies and biancane, while the areas with rocky substrata show sharp raised ridges with deep ravines. Mostly the centre-southern area is dominated by a vast wooded area of over 36500 hectares. There are many cliffs, gullies, biancane, rocky outcrops, fumaroles, solfataras and hot springs. In the Cecina valley there is a series of streams and rivers such as the Pavone, Trossa, Adio, Sellate, Sterza, Risecco, Ritasso, etc., which conserve the river environment which is still almost intact. The forest vegetation consists mainly of Mediterranean evergreens, and in particular the Holm oak and strawberry tree, together with viburno, mastic, heathers and myrtle. From a floral point of view there is a noteworthy selection of around thirty species of orchid. From a wildlife point of view, excluding the numerous hoofed species, the wolf stands out among the mammals; while among the hundred or so bird species nesting in the area there are various species of diurnal birds of prey.
